Richard Dickerson Gholson was born near Culpeper, Va., in Jan. 1802. He was educated in Virginia, moved with his parents to Kentucky when a young man, and there he studied law. He served in the Mexican War (1846-1848). Gholson was an ardent supporter of James Buchanan, stumping the state of Kentucky for him in his presidential campaign. When Buchanan was elected, Gholson was rewarded with the governorship of Washington Territory. Gholson arrived in the territory early in July 1859. ...

Charles H. Mason was the acting Washington Territorial Governor for Isaac I. Stevens in 1861. Shortly after the newly appointed Governor Richard Gholson arrived in Olympia, WA, Charles H. Mason passed away. Gov. Gholson had to act as both Governor and Secretary of Washington Territory until the arrival of Henry M. McGill. Henry M. McGill had been born about 1831.
